Polyvinylpyrrolidone-lodine (PVP-I)
Povidone-iodine (PVP-I), also known as iodopovidone, is an antiseptic used for skin disinfection before and after surgery. It may be used both to disinfect the hands of healthcare providers and the skin of the person they are caring for. It may also be used for minor wounds. It may be applied to the skin as a liquid or a powder. PVP-I (povidone-iodine) is a medical disinfectant with excellent comprehensive performance. In the 1980s, the western developed countries vigorously promoted the use of PVP-I (polyethylene chirolidone iodine, also known as povidone-iodine). PVP-I is the only iodophor currently recognized and widely adopted by developed countries through the US FDA. PVP-I is also the only iodophor listed as a national basic disinfectant by the Chinese Ministry of Health. Since its inception, scientists from various countries have demonstrated through research on chemical preparation formulations, structural analysis, pharmacology, toxicology, drug metabolism, bactericidal mechanisms, and kinetics that only PVP-I has the highest safety, and is recognized as the only disinfectant widely used in clinical practice for human skin and mucous membranes.
At present, hospitals mainly use iodine wine and iodine as skin disinfectants, which are prone to volatilization and cause significant skin irritation. PVP-I can overcome these shortcomings and is a good disinfectant. PVP-I is a broad-spectrum, efficient, low toxicity, and safe disinfectant that has good killing effects on bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, etc. It can not only be used for surgical disinfection, but also for the treatment of burns, skin ulcers, gynecological diseases, and the prevention and auxiliary treatment of sexually transmitted diseases.
